An end is every time a subsidence: and stop. Time and space itself are unlimited, they don’t even start, nor stop – but everything, what is happening in the space, has to be a beginning and an end.
But how to mark an end? Where is the definite ending – as well the pleasure just started?
The end is a radical promise, that from now on (in this case) there is nothing happening.
The Project NachKlang is an ongoing research-project, whose new results are permanently worked in. Starting point is a collection of descriptions of acoustic surroundings of people.
The question of the description of an acoustic surrounding, a particular sound or noise re-individualized the experience of an acoustic surrounding. Sound will be acquire through and in the description its event. We are interested in those voices, which signalise an acoustic pattern of the unheard.
NachKlang is as well an enquiry about the possibilities of (linguistic) descriptions of sound.
Four monitors are located in every corner of a room. Every voice is dedicated to one monitor. The voices report on sound and noise events, interrupted by (in max.) three other voices. The composition of voices occurs under different criteria, like in regards to its content or acoustic character of the voices. In such a way voices and reports of different origin encounter themself and shape an acoustic picture of an utpoian place.
“You’re walking. And you don’t always realize it,
but you’re always falling.
With each step, you fall forward slightly.
And then catch yourself from falling.
Over and over you’re falling.
And then catching yourself from falling.
And this is how you can be walking and falling at the same time.“
aus Laurie Andersons „Walking and Falling“: Big Science – Songs from United States I-IV
The story begins on ground level, with footsteps. they are myriad, but do not compose a series. They cannot be counted, each unit has a qualitative character: a style of tactile apprehension and kinesthetic appropriation. Their swarming mass is an innumerable collection of singularities. Their intertwined paths give their shape to spaces. They weave places together.
Michel de Certeau. The practice of everyday life
gegangen werden will walk you on the spot, you will move forward or rather you will get moved forward for not moving away from the spot. There is no question for the „Whereto“, we will go where.
It is thought as a moment, in which you get lost. And afterwards another moment and another one. An aimless labyrinth, in which you stroll aurally between spaces and thoughts. An abidance in walking, a moved pausing. Undesigned, full of leisure, without aim and reason. A moved perception instrument on the spot, a given rhythm, which is only at home in movement.
The presented video is the recording of the correspondent performance.
The performance, made for camera and public, exist of the simple intention to smile. The duration of the performance depends on the conditions of the place, where it is hosted – in this case the four-hours opening time of the gallery.
The smile, held over hours, develops to a examination, to a mask and back. The gesture of smiling is in a permanent survey itself, over the length its fragile corpus reveals the abyss and the collapse of control over the own face.
