Whithin her work „Letters“ Tomo Yamaguchi engages herself with an important part of human experience, recollection. By the end of 2001 she sent letters to friends and acquaintances in Germany, Japan and China. Within every letter Yamaguchi wrote a story she recollected about the friends or acquaintances she had lost a person once known.
During the exhibition the letters she received were presented, displayed as a notice board – with the letter she had written before next to it. Spectators were allowed to take the letters from the envelopes to read them. The artist also gave the visitors the chance to contribute by writing down a story themselves about a once known friend. Therefore a table with paper and pen was situated within near proximity to the ‚letter-wall‘. The story should then be put inside an envelope stating time and place to be finally pinned on the wall.
