In a society marked by urban civilisation, in which the majority of people live without direct contact to nature, an impression of nature is created which often deviates from the reality and frequently becomes an ideal. In an environment in which the original nature can no longer be experienced, a nostalgia for the closeness of nature occurs.
The works of the series „KATASTER“ traces the constructions and appearances of the contemporary perception of nature between nostalgia and function.
„RESERVAT“ is part of a work series entitled „KATASTER“.
The photographs were taken in the wildlife park in the Bavarian forest, the largest and oldest natural reserve in Germany. In contrast to areas used for forestry, here the forest is ‚left to itself‘. It can and should create its own original form. Wilderness is recreated in an „Act of Culturation“* in order to last but not least use it for touristic purposes. A wooden path leads through a piece of ‚primeval forest‘ and through all the images in the series. It simulates for the visitor the nature and standing point of the observer. Whether the forest is protected from the visitor by this path, or rather the other way round, is open to interpretation. But even the ‚museum-ing‘ of the wild holds nevertheless the last memory of the threatening uncontrolled.

The theoretical construct of the term ’nature‘ is exposed to historical change. Next to agricultural function, countryside should according to the requirements of the society of leisure also feature aesthetic values, as nature serves the purpose of relaxation for many today. For the duration of one year two lime trees were photographed, which formerly protected the wayside cross placed between them. Today a bench has been placed between them capitalising on the vantage point. This work is also part of the series „KATASTER“.
The work „the abnormal (01-07)“ presents photographs of deer antlers which are put on show at a wall. These antlers are not trophies of great hunting exploits; by contrast, they come from animals that do not represent the ideal. The work refers both to the cruelty of nature and of man.
